As the sole sponsor of the federal constitutional challenges to and , AFER brought together bipartisan attorneys to fight for the fundamental right to marry for gay and lesbian Americans. In 2013, AFER secured a at the United States Supreme Court that restored marriage equality to our nation’s most populous state, California. One year later, AFER’s decisive at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit brought marriage equality to the first southern state in the nation, Virginia, and set binding precedent for the freedom to marry in North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia.
